Over 180 Drones Shot Down Near Moscow in Large-Scale Night Attack, Raising Security Concerns

In a significant escalation of aerial threats near Russia's capital, Moscow's mayor Sergei Sobyanin reported the destruction of over 180 unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) during a large-scale drone attack on the night of August 17-18. Authorities intercepted a total of 620 drones heading towards the Moscow region, highlighting ongoing security challenges to critical infrastructure.
Targets and Damage Reported Near Strategic Facilities
While exact targets of the drone swarm remain unspecified by officials, local sources reported numerous explosions near towns including Noginsk, Zheleznodorozhny, and Elektrostal, all within the Moscow region. Most notably, the residential complex "Duna" in Kotelniki, located approximately five kilometers east of the Moscow Oil Refinery – a facility that has been targeted repeatedly in recent drone attacks – suffered damage during the assault.
“A large number of explosions were heard overnight near several towns, indicating the scale and intensity of the drone attack,” local Telegram channels noted.
The governor of Moscow Oblast, Andrey Vorobyov, confirmed civilian injuries resulting from falling drone debris, including a 10-year-old girl hospitalized with shrapnel wounds to her hand in Ramenskoye District. Additional injuries were reported in Bogorodsky District and Kolomna, where a 27-year-old man was hurt and a commercial pavilion near the Globus shopping center caught fire after drone fragments fell. Moreover, a warehouse operated by the major Russian e-commerce company Wildberries, located in the Bogorodsky district's "Atlant-Park" area, was also struck.
